Svadhyaya, which translates to "self-study" or "self-reflection," - It is a process of getting to know yourself…on a deeper level.

We spend so much of our life externally focused, meeting the needs and expectations of others. It is very easy to make it well into adulthood and still not REALLY know yourself - who you are & what YOU want.

This process of getting to know yourself takes intentional effort. Turning your focus and your attention inward. Observing what is happening in your inner world, your patterns, your habits, your thoughts and feelings.

It's not merely about understanding ourselves on a surface level but delving into the layers of our consciousness to foster a deeper connection.

Pack your Attitudes of Mindfulness:

At its core, Svadhyaya encourages individuals to explore their inner landscape with honesty, curiosity, and openness. It involves examining the things unfolding in that inner world without judgment. Through practices such as introspection, journaling, meditation, and contemplation, Svadhyaya invites us to observe ourselves from a place of curious, compassionate awareness.

Pack your Courage!

If the thought of turning your attention toward yourself feels uncomfortable…Notice That. Do you prefer to keep your attention out at others, to the external world? That is an important observation. “It is hard for me to look at myself.”

There is good reason for this.

When we look within we will see our own strengths, knowledge and unique personality…but we will also see our weaknesses, our self destructive habits and our fear. We know both aspects to be parts of our whole and when we go in- shining the light of awareness we need to pack some courage because we will see some challenging things.

The good news is- as we shine the light of awareness into some of the darker corners of our inner world…there is a HUGE amount to be learned! This is where we notice and accept ALL the parts of ourself as a whole. This is where we see some of the harmful patterns that may be operating under the surface and we can start to pull our energy away from them.

Without self awareness nothing can change or grow.

With self awareness we get to make conscious decisions about where our energy goes.

The Benefits of Svadhyaya

  • Self-Awareness: we gain insights into our strengths, weaknesses, desires, fears, and patterns of behavior. This heightened self-awareness empowers us to make conscious choices aligned with our authentic selves.

  • Self-Acceptance: Through Svadhyaya, we learn to embrace all facets of ourselves—the light and the shadow. By acknowledging and accepting our imperfections and vulnerabilities, we foster a sense of self-compassion and unconditional self-love.

  • Clarity of Purpose: Svadhyaya helps us discern our values, passions, and life purpose. By examining our beliefs and aspirations, we gain clarity on what truly matters to us and what brings meaning and fulfillment into our lives.

  • Personal Growth: The process of self-study inherent in Svadhyaya facilitates personal growth and transformation. As we confront our limitations and expand our self-awareness, we evolve into the best versions of ourselves.

  • Enhanced Relationships: A deeper understanding and acceptance of oneself naturally extend to our interactions with others. Svadhyaya enables us to cultivate empathy, compassion, and authenticity in our relationships.

Here are some practical ways to cultivate Svadhyaya:

  • Mindful Yoga: as you move, pay attention to the fluctuations of breath, the thoughts that come up, the emotions, the body sensations- practice open monitoring of your inner experience without judgment
  • Meditation: sitting in stillness with full attention on your inner landscape is an opportunity to be the non-judgmental observer of your mind, emotions and impulses that arise
  • Morning Reflection: Start your day with a few moments of quiet contemplation. Reflect on your intentions for the day, how you're feeling physically and emotionally.
  • Journaling: Keep a journal where you can freely express your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Writing can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and self-expression, allowing you to explore your inner world with clarity and honesty.
  • Mindful Awareness: Practice mindfulness throughout the day by bringing your full attention to the present moment. Notice your thoughts, sensations, and emotions without judgment, allowing them to arise and pass without attachment.
  • Seeking Guidance: Engage with spiritual teachings, literature, or mentors that inspire and support your journey of self-discovery. Reflect on timeless wisdom and integrate what feels supportive in your life right now.

Svadhyaya offers a deeper more intimate relationship with Self that becomes the guiding force in your life. By embracing the practice of self-study, we embark on a deep inner journey of self-awareness, self-acceptance, and personal growth.

As you work through all of the Yama’s and Niyamas the practice of Self Study is a theme that weaves through all the other teachings of yoga. Constantly checking in with yourself, listening to your inner guidance, letting this awareness steer your healing and your growth.

You will always be on the right path- if your guidance comes from a place of deeply knowing Self.

(Just remember…it is not an Easy path!)

Thanks for being here!
